It's important to select the right driver or your system might not boot after the change. Select the appropriate manufacturer and model, or click Have Disk to use a disk supplied by your computer manufacturer. Select "Show all hardware of this device class." Click Next, select "Display a list of the known drivers for this device so I can choose a specific driver," then click Next. Click the Driver tab and then click Update Driver to start the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard. Either action opens the property sheet for the driver. Double-click the driver listed under the Computer branch, or right-click the driver and choose Properties. In the right pane, expand the Computer branch. Open the Computer Management console and select the Device Manager node. (You know that because the Performance tab of the Task Manager shows only one CPU Usage History graph.) The usual cause of this problem is using the wrong system driver, so correcting the problem is as simple as installing the right one. You've installed Windows 2000 but it only recognizes one CPU. Visit the Winternals Software Web site for ERD Commander Professional and NTRecover with NT Locksmith for additional options that will let you reset the password and regain access to the system. If you can't afford to lose the existing accounts, you'll need to take a different approach. Both of them will let you boot the system and gain access to NTFS volumes. If the system drive is formatted as FAT, you can use a bootable DOS diskette. Otherwise, boot the system with a floppy to gain access to the folder and delete the file. If you installed the Recovery Console and configured it for automatic administrative log-on, you should be able to boot the RC, delete the file %systemroot%\System32\Config\Sam, and restart. When you restart Windows 2000 you'll have a new Administrator account with a blank password. If you can stand to lose all of the accounts on the computer (usually not a problem on a workstation), one of the easiest fixes is to delete the SAM hive, which stores the accounts.
